FERNANDO CALDERÓN - MURALS RESTORATION

In 1966, a young Spanish artist named Fernando Calderón came to stay with his old friend Reverend Canon Shreve at Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church in New Providence, New Jersey while he waited for a shipment of paintings to arrive by boat from Spain for an exhibition in California. The paintings arrived too late for the show. The Canon convinced him to stay at his church and paint the unique murals of the four Gospel writers and the twelve Disciples that grace the sanctuary as well as the Nativity mural in the parish hall. All of the beautiful murals were done for a dollar a day plus room and board. The sanctuary murals became badly damaged over the decades. They were painted with the first acrylic paints to be developed and the majority of the materials were donated to the church by a paint factory which was going out of business. In 2009 the murals were restored by Mr. Joseph F. Tiedemann, President of Renaissance Restoration Studios Inc., an outstanding master conservator. Joseph traveled to Spain to research the artist and restoration project. In the spring of 2010, the School of Visual Arts, Mr. Tiedemann's alma mater in New York City, issued an article about the restoration of the murals in the Spring 2010 SVA Visual Arts Journal, volume #18 - issue #1. Fernando Calderón went on to become one of the most renowned muralists of the 20th Century. Members of
Fernando Calderón's family contacted Mr. Joseph F. Tiedemann To express their sincerest thanks and joy over the magnificent artistic conservation efforts of Renaissance Restoration Studios Inc. Since the restoration was completed,  Joseph F. Tiedemann has been contacted by many artists, muralists, museums, and conservators from around the world to offer his insights about Fernando Calderón the artist, his methods, and materials. “I find myself in the unique position these days of being the unofficial Fernando Calderón expert. I feel I have become intimately connected to the artist discovering new aspects of the man each day as I meticulously reconstructed his life and work.”
